Kings in front of school

OUR HISTORY

Burdened to start an independent Baptist church in southwest Houston,

Richard King rented Highlands Elementary School in Sugar Land in August 1991 and began meeting every Sunday.  A dedication service was held September 8, 1991, and Highlands Baptist Church was officially started.  The school was used as a meeting location until June 1992 when a former Savings Loan Bank building was found and purchased in neighboring Missouri City.  As the name Highlands Baptist Church was no longer appropriate for their new location, the congregation voted to change the name to Cornerstone Baptist Church of Missouri City. The church was officially organized on January 24, 1993, with 42 people signing the charter. In 1997, Pastor King felt the Lord leading him to turn the church over to a full-time pastor and move on to continue his ministry of starting and helping struggling churches. It was October of that year that the church called Lamar Ard as the second pastor. After just a few years , the church realized it was quickly outgrowing its current facility and began investigating options for relocation. In 2003, the church moved from its building on Cartwright to its current facilities on Kingsbrook Lane. In 2010, the Lord allowed the congregation to pay off the mortgage and remodel the building. As the Lord has blessed through the years, He allowed Cornerstone to begin a new chapter once again and Russell Ellis was called to be the pastor in May 2021.

Since its beginning, Cornerstone has been tremendously blessed with pastors who have faithfully preached the Word of God, sought to win souls to Christ, and invested in helping people grow deeper in their daily walk with God. At each stage of Cornerstone’s existence, the Lord has provided a man of God to lead the people of God.  Through both seasons of difficulty and those of great growth, Cornerstone is grateful to have been led by pastors who never wavered from their strong, biblical convictions and stayed true to the doctrine and principles of the Word of God even when the world around has pressed for change. We are grateful for all that God has done and we anticipate all that God will continue to do!
